WATER CASTING & KUMIHIMO by Amelia Gilmore

My favourite water cast earrings.

We melted silver in a crucible and let it fall from a height into a bowl of water. The metal instantly solidified as it met the liquid, forming random and unique shapes. But strangely I think these two pieces share a similar theme- a bit like interpreting images in clouds or smoke, I see two different views of birds in flight.

Soldered to the edge of flat circular hoops, the birds fly from the ear.

Some of the silver pieces as they formed solid shapes in the water.

Kumihimo is a Japanese form of braid-making originally used on Samurai armour and their horses.

After making a special disc to braid the satin ribbon, we made something much more frivolous- bracelets in lovely school tie colours! Well at least I didn't pick beige and green. Finished with a silver fastening.

One of those things I'm glad I tried- now I know the technique I can adjust the colours and size for future pieces.

I dug out my old hook and wooden French knitting doll, still with an ancient half-finished bracelet, and set to work knitting silver wire instead. Now, that is tougher on the fingers!

But worth the effort I think after crocheting this wire bracelet and popping some pearls in the middle.

Found this electrical wire left in a heap in the kitchen after the electrician had done his magic fixing something or other. Of course I couldn't throw it away- looking forward to doing something wonderful with it...
